A normal AI assistant waits for you to remember what needs doing. Claude Duet wants to notice the work first.
Anthropic’s new agent can scan connected apps, prepare a morning brief and tell you when something appears to need attention. Give it a larger job and it can continue working on its own cloud computer after you close the app.
That makes the “24/7 assistant” description used in the Facebook video sound reasonable. It also needs a large footnote. Claude Duet does not monitor everything continuously. Its background work uses your normal Claude allowance, and you cannot watch or take over its browser.
This is a real change in how Claude works, but not yet a digital employee you can safely forget about.
Released as a research preview on October 21, 2026, Claude Duet is a separate agent app built around Claude Opus 5.5.
The main difference is who starts the conversation. Regular Claude responds when you open a chat and ask for something. Duet can examine your connected apps, decide that an issue deserves attention and message you first.
It carries over the memory, skills and app connections from your Claude account. You can give it instructions through text or voice, create separate channels for different parts of your work and follow active jobs through a Tasks tab.
Larger jobs can run in the background and return as editable files. Anthropic’s examples include research reports, financial models, presentations and dashboards.
Claude Duet is built mainly for professional and small-business work.
| Area | What Duet Can Do |
| Email and calendar | Prepare morning briefings, find missed messages and draft replies |
| Finance | Find unpaid invoices, prepare reminders and create forecasts |
| Administration | Schedule meetings and prepare payroll for review |
| Sales | Use CRM information to prepare follow-ups and reports |
| Marketing | Build campaigns, presentations and dashboards |
| Documents | Prepare agreements and send approved files for signature |
| Development | Prototype or build web apps in its cloud environment |
| Purchasing | Buy approved items through Link or Shop Pay |
Duet can use more than 6,000 connectors and plugins from the Claude Marketplace. Anthropic lists Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, QuickBooks, Stripe, Gusto, LinkedIn, DocuSign, HubSpot, Canva and Shopify among its examples.
When there is no suitable connector, Duet can open the website in its own cloud browser and attempt the task there.
Those are supported workflows and Anthropic demonstrations, however. They are not proof that Duet will complete each task correctly under messy real-world conditions.
The Facebook video describes Claude Duet as a proactive assistant that operates in the cloud even when your computer is off. That part is accurate. Duet has its own virtual machine and browser, so closing your laptop does not stop an active task.
But “always on” does not mean that it watches every connected account every second.
Anthropic says Duet checks connected services every few hours. Continuous monitoring would consume the user’s allowance much faster. That creates a small but important gap: an urgent message could arrive between checks.
Its background work is not free either. Morning briefings, routine checks and follow-ups all count towards the same five-hour and weekly limits used by normal Claude conversations. A long job, such as creating a financial model or presentation, can use considerably more model turns.

Who Can Use Claude Duet?
Access is limited during the research preview.
You currently need:
Duet is included in those subscriptions without a separate fee, but joining the waitlist does not guarantee immediate access. Anthropic is sending invitations in waves.
The app is available on iOS, Android and the web. It is not yet available to Free, Team or Enterprise users. You also cannot select another model; every task runs through Claude Opus 5.5.
The absence of Team and Enterprise access is particularly odd for a product built around company email, calendars, accounting and customer information.
The interesting part is not that Claude can draft another email. AI assistants have done that for years.
Duet is meant to notice that the email has gone unanswered, understand that the sender matters and prepare a reply before you remember to ask. The same idea applies to overdue invoices, calendar clashes, unsigned agreements and quiet sales leads.
That could save genuine time for consultants, founders and small-business owners whose work is split across several services. It also gives the agent a much harder job.
Writing a reply is easy to review. Deciding which message deserves your attention requires an understanding of urgency, relationships and business context. Anthropic acknowledges that this early version can misread a thread or misjudge what is important. It is also less capable at personal tasks such as booking tickets.
Duet’s value will therefore depend less on how many jobs it can start and more on how often it interrupts you for the right reason.
Claude Duet can read information and prepare work without asking at every step. It must request approval before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes something.
Purchases through Link and Shop Pay require confirmation and use one-time cards restricted to the approved purchase. Some actions- including trading securities and moving money between bank accounts- remain blocked even when the user gives permission.
Anthropic has also added a separate classifier that checks outgoing content for sensitive information. Passwords, authentication tokens and browser cookies are kept outside the model’s working environment. Anthropic nevertheless warns that these safeguards can miss sensitive content or mistakenly block harmless information.
Our bigger concern is visibility. Users cannot currently watch Duet operate its browser or take control when it makes a mistake. You can inspect tasks and steer them, but you cannot see every browser step behind the result.
That is a meaningful limitation for an agent trusted with invoices, agreements, purchases and customer messages.
Not yet but it makes Claude more interesting for people who want to delegate work rather than keep prompting a chatbot.
Our Claude review still recommends it mainly for writing, document analysis and careful text-based work. Duet adds a promising layer for Pro and Max users who manage their day through email, calendars, financial tools, and several business apps.
We would not upgrade only for Claude Duet while access remains waitlisted. Its shared usage limits, periodic monitoring, and hidden browser make the research preview difficult to depend on.
The real test will be whether Duet reliably finds useful work without becoming another source of notifications, and whether users have enough allowance left when they return to normal Claude.
For now, Claude Duet is one of the clearest examples of AI moving beyond answers and into actions. It may eventually become the assistant Anthropic is promising. During the research preview, we would still keep one eye on what it is doing, and another on the usage meter.
