Freshdesk

Freshdesk

Capable AI customer support, with per-agent and per-session charges hiding behind the entry price.

VERDICT

7.8
Conditional

"Freshdesk works well for growing support teams that need ticketing and AI in one system. Freddy handles routine tickets well, and Copilot saves agents time. But the $19 starting price does not include the complete setup. Copilot costs extra, AI sessions run out, and omnichannel support requires a separate plan."

Overview

Freshdesk is a customer support platform for managing tickets, email, help-center content, SLAs, routing, and reports. Its Freddy AI suite includes an AI Agent for customers, Copilot for support staff, and Insights for managers.

For this review, we tested Freshdesk’s Freddy AI for ticket routing, agent assistance, and automated customer replies.

The core product is solid. You get ticketing, a knowledge base, automation rules, SLA tracking, and canned responses. Setup takes a day, not weeks. For a team of 5-20 people handling support over email, it covers the basics well and doesn’t overwhelm you with settings.

Freshdesk’s AI is called Freddy, and it comes in two parts. Freddy Copilot helps your agents by suggesting replies, summarizing tickets, and pulling up relevant help articles. Freddy AI Agent is a bot that answers customer questions directly from your knowledge base. Both are useful, but neither is included in the base plan. Copilot costs about $29/agent/mo on top of your subscription. The bot includes 500 sessions on Pro and Enterprise, then charges $49 per 100 sessions after that.

The bot works well for simple, repetitive questions like order status, password resets, and basic how-tos. It doesn’t handle complicated questions, multi-step problems, or anything that isn’t clearly covered in your help docs. Freshworks calls it an “autonomous agent,” but that oversells what it can do today.

One thing that catches people off guard: there are two versions of Freshdesk. The basic one covers email and ticketing. If you need live chat, WhatsApp, or social media support, you need Freshdesk Omni, which starts at $29/agent/mo instead of $19. That difference isn’t obvious on the pricing page.

The free plan also isn’t what it used to be. It now covers 2 agents for 6 months, then you have to pay. It’s a trial, not a permanent option.

“Freshdesk gives you 500 AI sessions once. Your customers, rather inconveniently, will continue asking questions every month.”

Pros Cons
+ Freddy AI Agent handles routine, well-documented support questions with little setup – The included 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions are a one-time allowance, not monthly
+ Copilot produces useful summaries, reply drafts, translations, and article suggestions – Additional AI Agent usage costs $49 for every 100 sessions
+ Copilot licenses can be assigned only to agents who need them – Copilot adds $29 per selected agent on top of the Freshdesk subscription
+ Easier to configure and more affordable than Zendesk for mid-sized support teams – Chat, social, and messaging support require the more expensive Freshdesk Omni plans

Who would we recommend it to?

  • Growing support teams that have outgrown basic shared-inbox tools
  • Businesses that want AI assistance without Zendesk’s setup and pricing overhead
  • Teams handling large numbers of repetitive email support tickets
  • Companies that only need Copilot for selected high-volume agents

Skip it if:

  • You expect unlimited AI Agent usage inside the base subscription
  • You need advanced enterprise workflows, governance, or reporting depth
  • Most customer issues require complex investigation or account-specific actions
  • You need omnichannel support but are budgeting from standard Freshdesk prices
