Lovable

The cleanest AI app builder for non-technical founders. Just watch the credit meter.

VERDICT

7.6
Conditional

"Lovable is the best option right now for turning a plain English description into a polished, functional web app. The frontend output is genuinely clean (React + Tailwind), Supabase integration handles the backend, and GitHub sync means you own every line of code. The credit system needs monitoring, and anything requiring complex custom logic will send you to a real IDE eventually, but for MVPs and landing pages, it's hard to beat."

Overview

Lovable is an AI web-development platform that generates interfaces, logic, databases, authentication, storage, and server functions from a conversation. Projects can run on its cloud or sync to a Git repository.

For this review, we assessed its current building workflow, backend, code portability, security controls, credit system, and pricing.

Lovable’s workflow is conversational. Describe what you want, and it generates a working app with responsive UI, routing, and component structure. The frontend code is clean, properly componentized React with Tailwind CSS, and it reads like something a competent developer would write. That matters because the exit strategy is real: everything syncs to GitHub as a proper repo you can pull into Cursor or VS Code when the project outgrows the AI.

Supabase integration is the backend story. Lovable automatically provisions PostgreSQL databases, user authentication, file storage, and Edge Functions. For a non-technical founder building a SaaS MVP, getting auth, database, and payments (Stripe) working from a chat prompt is a genuine breakthrough.

The design canvas is a nice touch. You can sketch layout concepts, import design references, and have the AI match them. The visual output is consistently more polished than what you get from competitors in this space.

Where it stalls is complex logic. Multi-step workflows, intricate state management, or deeply custom features can trigger debugging loops where the AI chases its own errors in circles. Each loop burns credits. The Pro plan gives you 100 monthly credits plus 5 daily credits (capped at 150/mo total), and a heavy debugging session can eat 15-20 credits before you realize it’s stuck. Top-up packs cost $0.30/credit.

One security caveat worth knowing: Lovable generates beautiful login forms and connects them to Supabase Auth, but the actual security depends on your Row Level Security policies in the database. The built-in security checker only verifies RLS is turned on, not whether your policies are correctly written. And because the frontend runs in the browser, there’s a risk of API keys ending up in client-side code if you’re not careful. Sensitive logic needs to be manually moved to Edge Functions.

No staging environments either. Deployments go straight to production on Lovable Cloud. If your project needs compliance controls, network isolation, or HIPAA, you’ll need significant additional engineering.

“Lovable can build the screen, database, and login before lunch. It cannot decide which mistakes your business cannot afford.”

Pros Cons
+ Produces clean, componentized React + Tailwind code that exports cleanly to GitHub – Complex debugging loops burn credits fast with no automatic cutoff
+ Full-stack Supabase integration handles database, auth, and file storage automatically – Security enforcement depends on RLS policies the AI doesn't validate properly
+ Unlimited team members on all plans, no per-seat charges – No staging environment, deployments go straight to production
+ Design canvas lets you sketch layouts and match reference images – Daily credits don't roll over, use them or lose them

Who would we recommend it to?

  • Non-technical founders building SaaS MVPs or landing pages
  • Small teams that want full-stack app generation with clean code export
  • Designers who want to turn mockups into working apps quickly
  • Anyone planning to start in Lovable and graduate to Cursor or VS Code

Skip it if:

  • Your app requires complex custom logic, heavy state management, or novel algorithms
  • You need staging environments, compliance controls, or enterprise-grade security
  • You're a developer who'd rather write the code than prompt for it
  • You can't monitor credit usage and risk debugging loops draining your balance
