Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf, formerly Codeium) is an AI-native coding environment that combines inline autocomplete, multi-file editing agents, and cloud-based development sessions. It runs as a standalone IDE built on a VS Code foundation and supports JetBrains with active agent features.
The original Codeium strength remains intact. Tab completions are unlimited on every plan including Free, covering single-line and multi-line suggestions without touching your quota. Inline edits modify selected code without starting a full agent session. For developers who just want fast, reliable autocomplete, the free plan still delivers that without a subscription.
The agents are where the product has grown substantially. Devin Desktop’s agents read repositories, edit across multiple files simultaneously, run terminal commands, search documentation, respond to diagnostics, and verify their own output. Browser previews, Codemaps for visual repository navigation, and DeepWiki for codebase documentation are all built in. AGENTS.md support, MCP integration, rules, workflows, skills, and checkpoints let teams standardize how agents operate across projects. The Agent Command Center provides a Kanban-style view to manage both local and Devin Cloud sessions side by side.
Devin Cloud is the remote execution layer. Longer, more complex tasks run in an isolated cloud environment rather than on your local machine. For developers delegating multi-hour refactors, test suite generation, or repository analysis, this removes the machine dependency from the workflow.
Model flexibility is a genuine advantage. Paid users choose between frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Cognition, or let Adaptive routing select the most appropriate model per task. Since March 2026, plans have moved to token-based daily and weekly quotas, which allows more nuanced usage than a flat request count.
The billing transparency problem is the most consistent critique. The public pricing page describes quotas as “light,” “increased,” or “significantly higher” without publishing the actual numerical allowances per plan. A developer evaluating whether Pro at $20/mo covers their agentic workload can’t model it from published information. What you consume varies by model chosen, context window used, reasoning depth, and task complexity. Running the same task on GPT-4o versus Claude Opus 4.6 consumes different amounts from the same quota pool. Some developers burn through a monthly quota in a few days of heavy agent use.
JetBrains receives current agent support. VS Code, Vim, Visual Studio, Jupyter, Chrome, and Eclipse plugins still exist but are in maintenance mode, meaning they receive fixes but not new features. If your primary editor is one of the older plugins, the product roadmap is working against you.
Data handling deserves attention before any enterprise adoption. Cognition’s terms permit customer data to be used for training and product improvement. Paid users can opt out and enable zero data retention with model providers, but on the Teams plan, only a workspace administrator can enable that setting, not individual developers.
A fast browser-based full-stack builder that loses momentum as project context grows and tokens run out.
An AI coding assistant that writes, completes, and refactors code directly inside your IDE so you ship faster with fewer interruptions.
