Toast

A restaurant POS with an AI assistant for analyzing performance and making operational changes.

VERDICT

8.6

"Toast IQ is the strongest restaurant AI product in this group because it can change the system it analyzes. It answers questions about sales and labor, then lets a manager update menu prices, stock, availability, and clock-outs from the same conversation. That saves real work. Its advice is only as complete as the data held in Toast, and the Grow marketing product still combines beta software with a human marketing service."

Overview

Toast is a restaurant point-of-sale system that also handles payments, online ordering, menus, labor, guests, and marketing. Toast IQ is the AI assistant built across those products.

For this review, we assessed what Toast IQ can answer, which changes it can make, how much control the manager keeps, and what happens when important restaurant data sits outside Toast.

The main strength is that Toast IQ can act. A manager can investigate sales or labor, compare locations, change menu details and prices, mark items out of stock, update channel availability, correct certain clock-out issues, and set up upsells. Menu changes still require publication before going live.

The weakness is coverage. Toast IQ only knows what is recorded in Toast. It cannot account for unlogged waste, incorrect recipes, outside catering orders, local events, or labor changes made elsewhere. An answer can be accurate for Toast’s data and still be incomplete for the restaurant.

Toast IQ Grow combines a beta Marketing Agent, campaign software, and a human Marketing Success Manager. Its attribution may use estimated visits and average order values, so reported return is directional. Moving more operations into Toast improves IQ and increases switching costs.

“Toast IQ can make useful changes because it sits inside the POS. If the restaurant is only partly run through Toast, its answers will also be partial.”

Pros Cons
+ Can act on menu, stock, labor, channel, and upsell information – Cannot account for important information that was never entered into Toast
+ Uses live sales, guest, menu, and multi-location data from Toast – Becomes less useful when inventory, labor, or marketing runs elsewhere
+ Proactive feed surfaces issues without requiring a manager to ask first – Toast IQ Grow combines a beta agent with conventional software and human service
+ Keeps publication approval between an AI suggestion and a live menu change – The strongest AI benefits also make the restaurant more dependent on Toast

Who would we recommend it to?

  • Restaurants already using Toast for most daily operations
  • Multi-location operators that spend too much time comparing unit reports
  • Managers who want AI to make controlled changes, not only explain dashboards
  • Groups that want software and human help managing customer marketing

Skip it if:

  • Your sales, inventory, and labor data is split across unrelated systems
  • You want an independent analytics layer that supports several POS products
  • You are unwilling to make Toast the main operating record for the restaurant
  • You need campaign attribution based only on confirmed incremental sales
