Puzzle

AI-native accounting for startup books, close work, and operating metrics.

“Puzzle is the clearest QuickBooks alternative for US startups that want cash and accrual books, automated categorization, and startup metrics in one system. The Stripe integration alone removes substantial reconciliation work for SaaS businesses. Puzzle now offers Expert Reviewed and Full Service accounting through vetted partners, while tax filing and other professional services remain additional costs. The features that actually save time, recurring AI credits, enhanced categorization, and revenue recognition, don't start until Complete at $100/mo.”

Overview

Puzzle is an accounting platform for startups and accounting firms. It maintains cash and accrual books simultaneously without duplicate setups, which sounds like a baseline expectation but is genuinely uncommon at this price point. The balance sheet, P&L, and cash activity report are standard. Core and higher add burn, runway, margin, spend, revenue, and variance analysis alongside the financials. For a founder who currently switches between QuickBooks and a separate metrics dashboard, this consolidation is the main selling point.

The integration stack is purpose-built for the modern startup finance toolset. Mercury, Ramp, Brex, Stripe, Gusto, Rippling, Deel, and Rho all connect natively. The Stripe integration is where Puzzle earns genuine differentiation. It imports invoices, subscriptions, refunds, fees, and payouts, builds deferred-revenue schedules automatically, and calculates MRR, ARR, churn, and retention. For a subscription business reconciling Stripe manually, this alone can justify the subscription. The caveat: Stripe Connect and Stripe Issuing support is limited, and syncing runs daily rather than real-time, which matters when you’re trying to close books quickly.

Puzzle advertises up to 98% automatic categorization. That number deserves scrutiny. It combines rules, integration data, and AI to sort transactions, and 98% is the ceiling, not the floor. The remaining transactions require human review, and how many that is in practice depends entirely on your transaction variety. Complete adds enhanced categorization, AI reconciliations, accuracy checks, and analysis. If you’re on Starter or Core and hitting that ceiling regularly, you’re going to feel the gap.

The AI tools center on Chat, Cowork, and Close, which are now included in the AI Suite. Close inspects uncategorized transactions, reconciliation status, receipts, anomalies, and variances, and agents draft findings for human review before anything changes in the ledger. That approval requirement is the right design. AI that edits your books without oversight isn’t a feature, it’s a liability. The credit system is where Puzzle’s pricing shows its teeth. Starter and Core include 25 lifetime credits total, not monthly. That’s enough to evaluate the feature, not enough to run a month-end close on anything beyond a tiny operation. Complete gets 100 credits monthly and Scale gets 300.

Migration deserves a hard look before you commit, but Puzzle now offers a $149 white-glove migration service that includes historical data. Confirm the scope and level of transaction detail before leaving the previous accounting system. Multi-entity and multi-currency consolidation may still require additional tooling.

“Puzzle can automate much of the ledger. An accountant still owns the judgment and the filing.”

Pros Cons
+ Maintains cash and accrual books simultaneously without duplicate setups – Expert Reviewed and Full Service accounting are available through vetted partners at additional cost
+ Stripe integration covers subscription schedules, deferred revenue, MRR, ARR, churn, and retention – Starter and Core get 25 lifetime AI credits total, barely enough for evaluation
+ Strong native connections to the modern startup finance stack – White-glove historical migration costs $149, and its exact data scope should be confirmed before switching
+ AI close work requires human approval before any ledger changes are made – Multi-currency and multi-entity require a separate Joiin subscription

Who would we recommend it to?

  • US startups using Stripe, Mercury, Ramp, Brex, or modern payroll providers
  • Founders who want burn, runway, and revenue metrics living beside the ledger
  • Accountants looking for faster categorization and a cleaner month-end review workflow
  • Companies replacing QuickBooks before their structure becomes too complex to migrate cleanly

Skip it if:

  • You need native multi-currency or consolidated multi-entity accounting
  • You need a guaranteed historical migration scope without confirming the $149 service first
  • You expect tax filing and bookkeeping to be included in the software subscription
  • Your operation depends on inventory management or data sources Puzzle doesn't support
