seven shifts

7shifts

A restaurant workforce platform that uses AI to forecast sales, recommend labor, and build training lessons.

Tested: September, 2026

VERDICT

8.1
Recommended

"7shifts has useful forecasting, but it does not build the weekly schedule for the manager. It predicts sales and recommends how much labor the expected demand can support. A person still decides who works, which is the right boundary for a system that cannot judge skill, reliability, or team dynamics. The larger limitation is data: serious labor recommendations need months of clean history, and unusual weather, events, or local demand can still make the forecast wrong."

Overview

7shifts manages employee schedules, availability, time clocks, communication, compliance, tips, payroll, tasks, and training for restaurants. Its AI features forecast sales and labor, extract an existing schedule during setup, and turn documents into lessons and quizzes.

For this review, we assessed the forecast’s published accuracy, the data required for labor recommendations, what the schedule importer actually does, and the review needed for AI-generated training.

The sales forecast is the main AI feature. In May 2026, 7shifts reported 5.51% average daily error. That is an average across restaurants, not a guarantee for one shift. Weather, events, promotions, and local changes can produce a much larger miss.

POS integrations can import 90 days of history. Optimal Labor requires 15 weeks of sales, 15 published schedules, and at least 50 daily receipts. Recommendations can take four to 24 hours to update, so this is planning software rather than a same-day correction tool.

Optimal Labor recommends hours, not employees. It does not know skill, reliability, team dynamics, or which person can close a station. Managers still build the roster, which is the correct division of responsibility.

The AI Schedule Importer extracts shifts from image and spreadsheet files. It works only during the trial and once per company, making it a migration feature rather than ongoing scheduling AI. Course Builder creates lessons and quizzes from prompts or documents. Food safety, alcohol, harassment, labor law, and emergency material needs expert review.

“7shifts predicts how much labor a restaurant may need. Managers still have to decide who should work.”

Pros Cons
+ Publishes forecast error instead of presenting the model as certain – Optimal Labor needs 15 weeks of history and at least 50 daily receipts
+ Connects POS sales history to labor targets and actual performance – Labor recommendations may take up to 24 hours to recalculate
+ Leaves consequential staffing decisions with the manager – Schedule Importer is trial-only and limited to one use per company
+ Can turn existing training documents into structured mobile lessons – AI-generated safety and compliance lessons require expert review

Who would we recommend it to?

  • Restaurants with stable demand and a supported POS connection
  • Managers who want labor guidance without automatic employee assignment
  • Operators already using 7shifts for scheduling, time, and communication
  • Teams with reviewed manuals that need to be converted into short lessons

Skip it if:

  • You expect AI to create and publish the full weekly roster
  • Your restaurant lacks the volume or history required by Optimal Labor
  • Local events and weather make demand unusually difficult to forecast
  • You want to import outside schedules repeatedly after onboarding
