Adobe Firefly is an AI creative platform for generating and editing images, vectors, video, and audio. Its tools are built into Photoshop, Illustrator, Express, and other Creative Cloud apps. The Firefly website also includes Boards, an open canvas for developing and comparing campaign ideas.
We tested Adobe Firefly across product mockups, social graphics, ad creatives, and photo editing workflows. This review covers how it performs as a design tool for marketers and creative teams, both as a standalone web tool and inside Adobe’s apps.
The commercial safety angle is the biggest differentiator. Firefly is trained on Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content, and public domain material. That means the images you generate are cleared for commercial use without the copyright ambiguity that hangs over every other AI image generator. For agencies, brands, and any team that publishes AI-generated visuals commercially, that legal clarity is worth real money.
Where Firefly earns its reputation is as an editing tool, not a generation tool. Generative Fill inside Photoshop is genuinely excellent. You select a section of a photo, describe what you want there, and Firefly fills it in while matching the lighting, shadows, and depth of the surrounding image. Removing objects, swapping backgrounds, expanding canvas edges, and blending products into new scenes all work smoothly. For anyone who used to spend hours masking and cloning in Photoshop, this cuts the job down to minutes.
The web-based Boards feature is useful for teams. You can mass-generate layout ideas, compare variations side by side, and push assets directly into Creative Cloud apps. For creative teams working through campaign concepts, it speeds up the ideation stage.
Standalone image generation is where Firefly falls behind. The output defaults to a clean, overly polished look that feels like stock photography. Skin looks plastic, textures lack depth, and everything comes out a little too safe. Complex prompts trip it up. Spatial relationships, hands interacting with objects, and detailed compositions often come out wrong or merged together. You end up relying on Firefly’s built-in style filters and lighting toggles to steer results instead of just describing what you want.
Paid plans now include unlimited standard image and vector generations. Credits are mainly spent on premium features and partner models. That is fairer than the old system, but the number of credits used varies by model and output. Unused credits disappear at the end of the billing month.
The most realistic AI image generator available. So realistic, in fact, that it's a little unsettling.
The best-looking AI image generator on the market. Just don't expect it to do exactly what you ask.
