ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI assistant for writing, research, file analysis, coding, image generation, voice conversations, web search, and multi-step tasks. This review is based on three years of regular use across the Free and Plus plans. We used it for real writing assignments, research projects, coding support, file analysis, and workflow automation rather than relying on a few isolated prompts.
The range is still the main reason to choose it. A single account can help draft an article, check a spreadsheet, explain code, search the web, generate an image, and carry a project through several stages. Specialist tools may go deeper in one area, but few cover this much work without sending you to another platform.
The model you receive depends on the plan and where you use ChatGPT. The free plan and the $8 Go plan use GPT-5.6 Luna in regular chat, while GPT-6 Luna is available in the ChatGPT desktop app. Plus costs $20 a month and uses GPT-5.6 Sol in regular chat. It also includes GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6 Luna, and limited GPT-6 Astra access inside ChatGPT Work and Codex.
OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra first, followed by GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna on September 22, 2026. We did not use those releases for the hands-on testing behind this review. OpenAI’s launch benchmarks and early independent reports position Astra as the specialist model for demanding reasoning and technical work, while Sol and Luna are faster and cheaper models in the same family.
Pro now starts at $100 a month and includes five times the Plus usage. The former $200 tier has been paused for new sign-ups since September 10, 2026. Pro, Business, and Enterprise users can access Astra in regular chat, where it appears as GPT-6 Pro. Plus users receive only limited Astra access inside Work and Codex.
The interface remains easy to use despite the growing feature list. Most people can start with a normal chat and only open tools such as Deep Research, voice, image generation, or Codex when the task calls for them. Business also provides a shared workspace and admin controls, so ChatGPT is no longer limited to individual use.
Accuracy remains the main weakness. ChatGPT can state incorrect information confidently, especially when a question is niche, recent, or poorly documented. Memory can also be inconsistent, and lower-priced plans place tighter limits on advanced models and tools. Treat it as a capable working assistant, not a source that can publish unchecked facts.
ChatGPT is the safest general recommendation because it handles a broad range of work and has a low learning curve. Choose a specialist tool when one job matters more than everything else, but start here when you want one subscription that can cover most daily tasks.
