Gemini

A capable AI writer with the best free tier in the game, especially if you already live in Google Docs.

“Gemini is worth choosing if most of your writing already happens in Google Docs and Gmail. Its first drafts still need work, but the built-in Google workflow makes revising and publishing them very convenient.”

Overview

Gemini is Google’s general-purpose AI assistant. For writing, it can generate drafts, rewrite passages, summarize documents, research topics, adjust tone, and transfer completed responses directly into Google Docs.

For this review, we used Gemini across blog drafts, email copy, social captions, and document rewrites. We tested it in both the standalone chat and directly in Google Docs, where it serves as a built-in writing assistant.

The Google Docs integration is the highlight. Instead of copying and pasting between tabs, you can highlight a paragraph, click the Gemini button, and get a rewritten version inserted right into your document. For anyone who writes inside Docs daily, that alone removes a surprising amount of friction from the editing process.

Gemini also pulls real-time information from Google Search, which means it can reference current events and recent data in ways that most free AI tools can’t. For writing that needs up-to-date context, like news roundups or trend pieces, that’s a genuine advantage.

Where it falls short is consistency. On longer pieces, Gemini can drift from the tone you asked for, ignore formatting instructions, or contradict itself between sections. It also leans toward safe, broad language. The output is usable, but it rarely surprises you. If you’re looking for writing with personality or a strong point of view, you’ll be rewriting more than you’d like.

Gemini is a strong writing option for people already using Google products. The free plan covers most everyday needs, while a paid plan makes more sense for frequent writers who want higher limits and Gemini built directly into Docs and Gmail.

The free tier is hard to argue with. You get solid access without paying anything, which makes Gemini a low-risk starting point for anyone exploring AI writing tools for the first time.

"Gemini writes quickly and clearly, but the more specific your style gets, the more editing it tends to need."

Pros Cons
+ Google Docs integration lets you draft and rewrite without leaving your document – Tone and formatting instructions get ignored more often than they should
+ Pulls live information from Google Search for current, relevant content – Long-form output follows predictable patterns and lacks personality
+ Free tier is one of the most generous available, enough for most casual users – Can contradict itself on complex or detailed writing tasks
+ Works across Gmail, Docs, and Drive so everything stays connected – Doesn't cite sources unless you ask, so claims need manual verification

Who would we recommend it to?

  • Writers who already work inside Google Docs and want AI built into their workflow
  • Anyone looking for a capable free writing tool with no subscription pressure
  • Content creators who need real-time information baked into their drafts
  • Small teams on Google Workspace who want AI assistance without extra cost

Skip it if:

  • You need consistent, polished long-form output with minimal editing
  • Tone control and formatting precision matter to your workflow
  • You want writing that sounds distinctive rather than safe and broad
  • You're comparing it head-to-head with Claude or ChatGPT on writing quality alone
