Grok is an AI assistant for chat, research, voice, image and video generation, coding, and connected app tasks. It is available through its own website and apps as well as through X. Paid plans raise limits and unlock the newest models and creation tools.
For this review, we assessed live search, connectors, Private Chat, model access, pricing, and the boundary between standalone Grok and Grok on X. We focused on source quality during a developing event.
X search is Grok’s defining tool. It can search posts, fetch threads, inspect accounts, and understand attached images or videos. During an outage or breaking event, it can surface direct observations before a formal summary appears.
Real-time X integration is the differentiator. Ask Grok about a breaking news event, a stock movement, or a trending topic, and it pulls live posts, synthesizes sentiment, and surfaces counterpoints from the conversation as it’s happening. No other assistant does this. For journalists, traders, marketers monitoring social sentiment, or anyone whose work depends on knowing what’s happening right now, this is a genuine advantage.
The 2-million token context window is the largest of any consumer AI assistant. For processing long documents, extensive codebases, or multi-document analysis, the sheer capacity is a practical benefit that shows up on complex tasks.
Grok Imagine generates images and videos, and the output quality is decent. The “weirdness slider” for video generation is a fun creative control. No watermarks on output, and videos cap at five seconds.
Here’s what the marketing doesn’t emphasize. The infrastructure struggles under load. Throughout 2026, “high demand” errors, failed connections, and responses stopping mid-generation have been a recurring problem. Paying $30/mo for SuperGrok is supposed to mean priority access, but premium users still report hitting capacity walls regularly.
The content moderation situation is more serious. In early 2026, Grok’s image generation was used to create non-consensual imagery of real people, including minors, triggering investigations in 12+ countries, temporary bans in several, and a lawsuit. xAI has added restrictions since, but content moderation remains inconsistent. If you’re using this for professional work, that reputation risk is worth considering.
Privacy is another factor. Free tier conversations may be used for model training. Only Business and Enterprise plans guarantee your data isn’t used for training purposes. xAI became a subsidiary of SpaceX in February 2026, adding another layer of corporate uncertainty.
