HeyGen

The AI avatar platform for marketing teams who need talking-head videos in 175 languages.

Tested: September, 2026

VERDICT

7.9

"HeyGen is the best tool for creating avatar-driven video content at scale, especially for multilingual marketing. Avatar IV quality is the most realistic in the category, and the 175+ language translator with lip-sync is genuinely unmatched. But HeyGen retired its unlimited plans in May 2026 and moved entirely to credits. The new Creator plan at $29/mo produces roughly 4 short videos per month on premium features. Run the credit math before you pick a tier."

Overview

HeyGen creates presenter videos from scripts, footage, photos, voice clones, and templates. For this review, we assessed Avatar III, IV, and V, Digital Twins, Video Agent, translation, rollover, and identity slots.

Avatar IV is the headline. The realism is a clear step above every competitor. Avatars blink naturally, gesture contextually, and maintain facial expressions that match the script’s emotional tone. For spokesperson-style videos, product demos, and training content, the output looks professional enough to post without disclaimers.

The video translator is the other major strength. Upload an existing video in any language, and HeyGen translates the audio, clones the voice, and re-syncs the avatar’s lips to match the new language. Across 175+ languages. Audio dubbing is unlimited on all paid plans and doesn’t consume premium credits. For global brands producing the same video in 20+ markets, this alone justifies the subscription.

The credit change in May 2026 is what you need to understand before buying. HeyGen moved from unlimited video plans to credit-based billing. Avatar III studio videos cost 3 credits/minute. Avatar IV and V cost 20 credits/minute. Video Agent costs 20 credits/minute. The Creator plan at $29/mo includes 600 credits. On paper, that sounds generous. In practice, if you’re using Avatar IV for a 2-minute video, that’s 40 credits per video, giving you roughly 15 standard videos or 4-5 premium ones per month. Legacy unlimited plan holders keep their plans, but can’t switch back if they cancel.

The free plan offers 3 videos per month (up to 1 minute each), which is enough to evaluate avatar quality but not enough for any production workflow.

"HeyGen makes the most realistic AI avatars in the business. The credit system makes sure you count every second they're on screen."

Pros Cons
+ Avatar IV is the most realistic AI spokesperson available in 2026 – Unlimited plans retired May 2026, everything is credit-based now
+ 175+ language translation with lip-sync and voice cloning is unmatched – Avatar IV consumes 20 credits/minute, limiting premium video output on lower plans
+ Audio dubbing is unlimited on all paid plans, doesn't consume premium credits – Not a scene generator; it produces talking heads, not cinematic footage
+ Free plan includes 3 videos/month with Avatar IV access for evaluation – Business plan at $149/mo required for collaboration features
