Puzzle is an accounting platform for startups and accounting firms. It maintains cash and accrual books simultaneously without duplicate setups, which sounds like a baseline expectation but is genuinely uncommon at this price point. The balance sheet, P&L, and cash activity report are standard. Core and higher add burn, runway, margin, spend, revenue, and variance analysis alongside the financials. For a founder who currently switches between QuickBooks and a separate metrics dashboard, this consolidation is the main selling point.
The integration stack is purpose-built for the modern startup finance toolset. Mercury, Ramp, Brex, Stripe, Gusto, Rippling, Deel, and Rho all connect natively. The Stripe integration is where Puzzle earns genuine differentiation. It imports invoices, subscriptions, refunds, fees, and payouts, builds deferred-revenue schedules automatically, and calculates MRR, ARR, churn, and retention. For a subscription business reconciling Stripe manually, this alone can justify the subscription. The caveat: Stripe Connect and Stripe Issuing support is limited, and syncing runs daily rather than real-time, which matters when you’re trying to close books quickly.
Puzzle advertises up to 98% automatic categorization. That number deserves scrutiny. It combines rules, integration data, and AI to sort transactions, and 98% is the ceiling, not the floor. The remaining transactions require human review, and how many that is in practice depends entirely on your transaction variety. Complete adds enhanced categorization, AI reconciliations, accuracy checks, and analysis. If you’re on Starter or Core and hitting that ceiling regularly, you’re going to feel the gap.
The AI tools center on Chat, Cowork, and Close, which are now included in the AI Suite. Close inspects uncategorized transactions, reconciliation status, receipts, anomalies, and variances, and agents draft findings for human review before anything changes in the ledger. That approval requirement is the right design. AI that edits your books without oversight isn’t a feature, it’s a liability. The credit system is where Puzzle’s pricing shows its teeth. Starter and Core include 25 lifetime credits total, not monthly. That’s enough to evaluate the feature, not enough to run a month-end close on anything beyond a tiny operation. Complete gets 100 credits monthly and Scale gets 300.
Migration deserves a hard look before you commit, but Puzzle now offers a $149 white-glove migration service that includes historical data. Confirm the scope and level of transaction detail before leaving the previous accounting system. Multi-entity and multi-currency consolidation may still require additional tooling.
