Ideogram is an image platform focused on typography, layout, transparent assets, editing, and custom models. Ideogram 4.0 is its current open-weight model and supports 2K output.
We tested Ideogram across logo concepts, social media graphics, poster designs, product labels, and marketing banners. This review covers how it performs as an image generator with a focus on text-heavy visuals.
Text rendering is still the headline. Ideogram was built from the start to handle typography inside generated images, not as an afterthought bolted onto a diffusion model. The result is 90-95% accuracy on embedded text, including multi-word phrases, taglines, and even paragraph-length copy on posters. Put your desired text in quotes within the prompt and it renders correctly the vast majority of the time. For anyone producing graphics that need legible words, this is the tool that eliminates the Photoshop step.
Image quality has improved dramatically since launch. Version 3.0 and 4.0 brought photorealism, composition, and lighting much closer to the competition. Product photography, architectural renders, and illustrated characters all come out polished. It’s still not at Midjourney’s level for raw cinematic aesthetics, and it trails FLUX on photorealistic portraits, but for design work it’s more than capable.
Style Codes are an underrated feature. Save a successful style and apply it across future generations for consistent visual identity. For brand work or campaigns that need a cohesive look, this saves the trial-and-error of reprompting the same aesthetic over and over.
The Canvas editor with Magic Fill handles selective inpainting, letting you change backgrounds, swap objects, or fix details without regenerating the whole image. Batch generation (Pro and above) accepts spreadsheet uploads for bulk creative runs.
The free tier changed. It was cut from 10 images per day to 10 per week in early 2025. Free images are public by default and JPG-only. It’s still enough to test the tool, but not enough for any real production use. Basic at $8/mo is where working with Ideogram realistically begins.
Safety filters are aggressive. Legitimate creative prompts get blocked more often than they should, and there’s no official Android app yet.
